TIMELINE So long Charlie Brown and thanks for all the laughs After 50 years of "Peanuts", Charles Schultz sadly died. Below are some of the highlight from his career 1950's 1950: ( Oct 2) The first "Peanuts" comic strip appears in seven daily newspapers 1955: The CARTOONIST SOCIETY honours Charles Schultz with the RUEBEN award 1958: The first Snoopy figure is born. He stands on two legs for the 1st time ever. Schultz is named 'Cartoonist of the year' 1960's 1960: "Peanuts" greetings cards are introduced 1965 The first TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is shown, and it wins an EMMY and PEABODY award 1967: LIFE magazine has the gang on its front cover 1969: Snoopy and Charlie Brown accompany astronauts into space aboard Apollo X 1970's 1978: International Pavillion Of Humour names Schultz 'cartoonist of the year' 1980's 1980: The Women's Sports Foundation, led by Billie Jean King, appoints Schultz to the board of directors. 1983: The TV special "What Have We Learned Charlie Brown?" wins Peabody award 1984: "Peanuts" strip sold to 2,000th newspaper 1988: The premiere of the first tv series, "This Is America Charlie Brown" 1989: The Biography of Schultz "GOOD GRIEF". Snoopy shares the stage with Wynton Marsalis 1990's 1990: The 40th anniversary of "Peanuts" kicks off at the super bowl XXIV 1993: Charlie Brown hit a home run, his first in 43 years! 1995: The official peanuts web site is born 1999 "You're a good man Charlie Brown" opens on broadway on Feb 4 and wins 2 Tony awards and 3 Drama desk awards. 2000 Feb 12 2000: Charles Schultz dies at the age of 77 |
